This post will share our awesome livestock bulk feed storage system perfect for the small scale farm or homesteader!
Although this “project” didn’t start out as a solution to bulk livestock feed storage it’s an amazing compromise between 50lbs bags and a 3 tonne grain bin!
Bulk Feed Storage Solution
We heat our farmhouse with a corn stove, the stove literally burns whole corn and it was becoming a chore to buy and store 50lbs bags. The feed mill offers bulk bags which our new tractor and pallet forks would have no troubles lifting. We made our first order of a half tonne of corn and proceeded to scoop out corn, bucket by bucket. Once the bag was empty we realized there was a “bottom spout” we could have been using the whole time. Duh!
Ryan made a wooden holder that sat on metal racking in the shop with a “door” where this bottom spout was. In theory, we would store the big bag with the spout open and slide the door back and forth to fill up buckets.
Well… 15 seconds later we had a half tonne of corn on the shop floor. Fun.
A Better Way
After doing some poking around online we came across the FLEDBAG Easy and decided to order one. It cost us about $200CAD with shipping and came in two days. This has probably been one of the best small investments we have made on our homestead.
It’s a small, well made, heavy duty boot dispenser that fits any big bag with a bottom spout. They also have an model for big bags without the spout!
Simply lift your big bag up, loosen the spout, and attach the FLEDBAG with the metal snap. Voila! It’s super easy and can be installed and operated by one person. Opening and closing the FLEDBAG is very smooth, the corn instantly stops when you swing the lever back.
We plan on buying and storing our hog grower in bulk bags with our FLEDBAG this summer. It will significantly reduce the amount of time we spend at the feed mill, not to mention filling up their feeder. We will be able to life the big bag over their feeder in the pasture and dispense the grower directly, no need for buckets!
Although this may sounds like a sponsored post, unfortunately no one is paying me for this content! Ha! We honestly LOVE this product and can see it play an integral role around our homestead!
