We are on well water which due to its hardness leads to some pretty bad yellow staining in our sinks and showers. I find the stains build up particularly fast when we’re nursing bottle calves, since we run the tap until the water is hot 3 times a day. I’ve tried to clean the stains with all different types of cleaners and scrubbed, and scrubbed, and scrubbed. To the point where the finish on my antique drainboard kitchen sink began peeling.
Oh, and the stain were STILL there!
No scrubbing bathroom sink cleaning hack
I was fed up and went to my cupboard thinking I needed something MORE abrasive but as I was looking came across a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner. I thought, if this stuff can clean the stains out of the toilet why can’t it clean the stains out of the shower and sink? Well it turns out it can – NO SCRUBBING required!
Gather yourself a sponge or rag, rubber gloves, and a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner. I really like the Lysol brand of toilet bowl cleaner and have used a few different types to clean my sinks.
Wet your surface, in my case I just run the tap then plug the sink. Plugging the sink allows the cleaner time to sit without draining right away.
Pour some toilet bowl cleaner directly onto the stain, work from the outside in as the cleaner with naturally move towards the drain.
You will immediately see the stains melting away! It’s really, really satisfying! Generally I don’t need to let the stain soak and wipe the cleaner off right away. You can see in the photo below how good of a job it really does. I didn’t think there was a stain outside of the cleaner but I ended up wiping down the entire sink.
Rinse and enjoy your sparkling white CLEAN sink!
I’ve used this method in my white tiled shower and porcelain sinks with excellent results! I love that it’s one less cleaning product I have to stock, it’s scrub free, and doesn’t harm the finish! Let me know if this bathroom cleaning hack works for you in the comments below!
